To prime a pumptec pump, use a priming hose or if you do not have one you can either pop a male quick disconnect fitting into the female QD on the wand end of your blue solution hose, or if you do not have an extra male QD you can simply remove the female off the end of your solution hose temporarily, to perform the priming process. The solution hose with the working end opened up by inserting the male QD or by removing the female, is now functionally your acting priming hose. Please make sure you have water in the fresh water tank and the power cord(s) are on plugged in.

1) take your priming hose and insert the blank/plain brass male QD end of hose into the brass female connection on the extractor.

2) Take the open (other end) end of priming hose and insert it into the vacuum port on your extractor. this is the 1 1/2 inch barbed plastic nipple that you connect your vac hose to when cleaning.

3) grab the end of priming hose that is in the vac port with your fist and using your fist as a gasket to seal the air flow, turn on both the pump switch and both vac motor switches and hold in place for about 30 seconds. The idea is to use the air rushing into the machine to forcibly suck water from the fresh water tank, through the pump , and out the solution hose thereby removing trapped air from inside the pump head and causing the pump to establish a prime.

4) once the pump is primed and you have verified this by pulling your fist back from the vac port while all three motors are still running and visually confirmed the steady flow of water from the open end of the priming hose running into the vac port. at this point you can move the priming hose's open end to a position over the top of the fresh tank and water should continue to flow gently into the fresh tank. If you try to block the flow with your thumb it should not be possible and the harder you try to block the flow of water the more pressure the pump should develop.

5) Turn off vacs and pump switches and remove the priming hose or in the case of an acting priming hose either remove the male QD or reinstall the female, whichever is required to return the soluion hose to it's original condition, then make the necessary connections to proceed with cleaning the carpet. The pump should stay primed untill the next time it is run dry which will suck another air pocket into the pump head from the empty fresh tank, requiring another priming procedure.

If you do not own a priming hose, or an extra QD to insert in the end of your pressure, or do not have a priming lever/ball valve built onto the machine, you can always remove the QD of the end of your pressure hose and turn it into a temporary priming hose. If you have a priming lever or priming ball valved on machine, please just place your hand over the vacuum port, turn on the vacuum, turn on the pressure pump, turn the priming lever for 5 seconds and turn off the priming lever, and the pressure gauge will show the correct pressure.

These instruction will also work on other brands of pumps including Shurflo and Flojet

You can purchase a auto primer from most Pumptec distributors it has a priming valve with a male QD. on the end and it will help priming
