i've heard alot about this. when do you use defoamer solution?

Defoamer is cationic and will void new 5th generation carpet newer than 5 years of age and should only be used when the carpet has lots of pre-existing foam issues. (hopefully your not using a product that is the source of the foam)
Commercial use is usually fine to use.
Defoamer is available in powder and liquid form and can be placed on the carpet, vacuum hose or in the waste tank.
Defoamer floats so if you do not drain your waste tank completely, you might be able to reduce the quantity consumed.
