Many pieces of equipment can be used in more than one field or line of work, so try to focus on what type of customer you think would be easiest to acquire. It is to your advantage to specialize in one field before moving to the next field. For example, lets say you are going to want to start a carpet cleaning business.
With over 400 models of machines to choose from, if you can answer some of these questions, we can really narrow down the search.
Do you want gas
powered equipment or electric?
(Share
your Comments here.) If looking for electric,
what size tank capacity are you looking for? (1-3
gallon, 4-6
gallon, 9 to 12 gallon, 15 to 17 gallon, 20+)
Do you want a heater installed? (Heated
machines are twice as aggressive as non heated machines.
Every 1750 watts of heat adds 25 degrees to cleaning temperature to carpet
cleaning and 50 degrees to upholstery cleaning. Do you want to mount the
heater on the inside of the machine? Or use an external
mounted heater to lighten the weight of the extractor
and make it easier to lift the equipment in and out of the truck?)
Do you have a limit to the number of power cords you are willing to
pug in? Are you 'OK' with using the customers electric
220 volt dryer plug? (Machines are made to operate
on one, two, three, or four 120 volt power cords or have a 220 volt option
)
Do you need a machine that is auto
fill and auto dump? (Great for cleaning larger jobs,
using power wands, tile/grout cleaning and de-flooding)
What is the maximum
hose length you would like to run? (Do you want to:
have the machine follow you around the house ; leave
the machine on the first floor and just run the hoses to the second floor
for cleaning ; or even leave the
machine in you truck while you clean ?) Do you want
your carpet machine to have enough vacuum to clean air ducts as well?
How much water pressure do you what? (More psi means being able to clean
faster. With 100 psi machines, you have to pre scrub and pre clean the
carpet and use the machine to just rinse the carpet, while 400 to 500
psi is preferred by most pros. 1000 to 1500 psi option will allow you
to clean tile and grout)
Will you use the same machine to clean ceramic tile floors? (1000 psi capabilities)
Do you have a budget you have to stay in? (Would it help to use one of our 6 month, No payments, No interest loans?)
How heavy can the machine be? (What is the height of the floor of the service truck you have to lift to? Do you want to use a ramp to save your back? Are you going to have a helper and be able to team lift the machine? The maximum weight that most people can lift by themselves is 140 lbs. The Texas Workforce Commission has published that they recommend team lifting anything over 150 lbs.)
Are you going to cleaning allot a vacant apartments where you are going up and down a lot of stairs? (Machines that have ten inch wheels or larger, or have balloon tires, or both)
If you are going to purchase gas powered equipment, do you want to carry fresh water with you? Keep in mind that 100 gallons weight over 800 lbs a 3/4 to 1.5 ton rated truck is recommended.
Do you want to use this gas powered machine to pressure wash? Some machine
only push the water 500 psi, some 1000 psi, some 2200 psi and others 3000
psi. Carpet cleaning is performed at 500 psi. Pressure washing is performed
at 1000 to 3000 psi depending on how fast you want to clean and move across
the surface. Canvas canopies and awnings are cleaned at 1000 psi because
it is a fabric. Tile cleaning works great at 2000 psi but can be performed
at 1000. There are safety issues at 3000 psi because the pressure can
cut right through flesh. So where protective gear so as not to cut your skin from the pressure.
How much do you spend on advertising? The national average is 7% of gross
sales. ChemDry franchise used to recommend 20% of sales. During a 20 year
test I ran on budgeting for advertising I recommend 10% of sales.
Where are the best places to advertise?
How big of a truck should I purchase?
Where can I get training on this type of work?
Any specific questions you have need to be addresses to our Message
Board
