How the Demand Switch and Internal Bypass Work
The pump automatically starts when a spray valve or other outlet is opened and system pressure drops. When the outlet is closed, pressure rises and the demand switch turns the pump off.
The internal bypass allows some liquid to recirculate inside the pump head when flow is restricted. This helps provide smoother operation and can reduce rapid on-and-off cycling. The bypass is not intended to replace a properly designed pressure regulator when precise system-pressure control is required.
Common Applications
- Portable carpet-cleaning extractors
- Upholstery and auto-detailing machines
- Commercial spraying systems
- Car-wash chemical or water delivery
- Agricultural and pest-control sprayers
- Industrial liquid-transfer equipment
- Replacement pump for compatible 115-volt cleaning machines
Important Installation Information
Confirm compatibility before ordering. Match the complete pump number, voltage, pressure rating, port size, valve material, wiring, pump-head orientation, mounting-hole pattern, and available installation space.
- Disconnect electrical power before installation or service.
- Use fittings with the correct 3/8-inch NPT thread.
- Do not overtighten fittings into the nylon pump housing.
- Use an inlet strainer to prevent debris from damaging the valves and diaphragm.
- Do not operate the pump dry for extended periods.
- Flush incompatible chemicals from the pump after use.
- Check the chemical manufacturer’s compatibility information before pumping solvents or aggressive chemicals.
- Installation and electrical work should be performed by a qualified service technician.
Priming After Installation
A newly installed pump may contain trapped air, especially when used in a carpet extractor with a check valve, heater, long solution hose, or restrictive plumbing.
Fill the freshwater tank, open the discharge flow and allow the pump time to prime. If the pump runs but does not move water, the system may require vacuum priming to remove trapped air from the pump and inlet line.

Pump Orientation
The Shurflo 8000-812-288 is closely related to model 8006-812-288. Depending on the original equipment installation, the pump head or ports may be positioned differently.
Do not rely only on a photograph. Compare the complete part number and installation configuration before ordering. In some applications, the pump-head orientation may be changed by a qualified technician, but the purchaser remains responsible for confirming fitment.

Available Repair Options
Depending on the condition of your existing pump, replacing the complete pump may not always be necessary. Replacement pump-head assemblies and other service parts may be available for selected Shurflo 8000-Series pumps.
Carefully inspect the motor, bearings, switch, valves, diaphragm, pump housing, and wiring before deciding whether to repair or replace the complete assembly.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is this a 12-volt pump?
No. This model operates on 115 volts AC. Do not connect it to a 12-volt DC power source.
Does the pump produce 1.4 GPM at 100 PSI?
No. The 1.4 GPM rating is the approximate maximum open-flow rating. Flow decreases as operating pressure and system restriction increase.
Does the pump automatically turn off?
Yes. The demand switch is designed to stop the pump when the outlet closes and system pressure reaches the switch setting.
What is the purpose of the internal bypass?
The internal bypass allows limited recirculation inside the pump head when flow is restricted, helping reduce rapid switch cycling and pressure surges.
Can this pump handle chemicals?
The Viton valves provide resistance to many chemicals, but compatibility depends on the complete liquid formulation, concentration, temperature, and exposure time. Verify compatibility before use.
Will it directly replace every pump with similar specifications?
No. Two pumps can share the same voltage and pressure rating but have different ports, mounting patterns, wiring, switch settings, materials, dimensions, or pump-head orientation.
